Youth Surveys Done Right

Picture
The Community-Level Youth Development Evaluation (CLYDE) is a flexible youth survey that satisfies DFC and other grant-funded reporting requirements. CLYDE builds on the Communities that Care Youth Survey to collect current data on youth substance use prevalence, developmental risk and protective factors, and other key community characteristics.

CLYDE Youth Survey
Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT DO I GET WITH THE CLYDE SURVEY?
With CLYDE, you get more than just a survey. This includes:
  • Teacher instructions, an administrator checklist, a parental passive consent form, and documents that can be shared with schools, districts, and stakeholders to help them understand the survey and its benefits
  • Up to 1 hour of consulting for survey planning, which can include discussing surveying best practices, engaging stakeholders, or meeting directly with school administrators about the survey (by email, Zoom meeting, or phone).
  • Up to 1 hour of extra question review and feedback (if including extra questions)
  • Professional reports with your data outcomes. This includes a stakeholder friendly summary report outlining the measures of interest to your community, and an in-depth cross-tabulation report with data for all questions asked on the survey.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE THE SURVEY?
Average completion time is 25 minutes for the full survey (an additional 10-15 minutes should be allotted for the teacher to provide instructions and answer any questions). The Core Measures survey, and the Modular Survey, will take less time to complete.

CAN WE ADD EXTRA QUESTIONS TO THE SURVEY?
You can add up to 10 additional questions to the survey. (You can add up to 99 extra questions, but we recommend limiting additional questions to a set of 10 or fewer.)

CAN WE CUSTOMIZE THE SURVEY?
You can add extra questions. CLYDE also has a Modular Survey, where you can choose from groups of questions to include or omit (modules include: DFC Core Measures Module, Mental Health, Risk Factors, Protective Factors, Sources and Locations of Alcohol Use, and more.) Individual survey questions cannot be omitted or changed. We cannot include open-ended questions. In most cases, we are unable to change question language due to survey validity concerns.

CAN WE ASK ONLY THE DRUG FREE COMMUNITIES CORE MEASURES?
Yes, you can choose our Core Measures Survey, which includes the DFC and Stop Act required measures, along with some required demographic questions and a small series of additional substance use questions. This results in a much shorter survey than the full CLYDE survey.

HOW MUCH DOES THE SURVEY COST?
The cost of the survey is $2.75 per completed survey, and an additional $0.25 per survey if you include extra questions (with a minimum of $1,375 per administration, and a minimum of $300 for extra questions). This includes all reporting and support, as outlined above. The cost is the same for the full CLYDE Survey, the Modular Survey, or the Core Measures Survey.

HOW DOES SURVEY BILLING WORK?
You are billed for the number of surveys completed (not the number you estimate on the order form). Please note that surveys completed outside of your requested grade level (e.g., 9th graders completing the survey in a grade 8, 10, 12 administration) are billable.

HOW SOON CAN WE ADMINISTER THE SURVEY AFTER ORDERING?
Administration can begin as soon as 4 weeks after a completed order form and finalized extra questions (if needed) have been submitted. If you need a shorter timeline, please reach out to us as soon as possible to [email protected] to discuss.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECEIVE THE RESULTS?
Our completely automated system cuts reporting time to 2 weeks or less.

WHAT REPORTS/RESULTS WILL WE RECEIVE?
Individual reports are generated for each school, and aggregate reports are generated for each school district and county (as is relevant). This includes a shorter summary report and an in-depth report with data for all questions asked for in the survey. You will receive electronic copies of each report.

WHAT IF I WANT TO DO MORE WITH THE DATA?
We have additional products that help you get the most out of your data – an online Dashboard to easily share the data with your community (e.g., how data differs by grade level or gender, etc.) and a Data Explorer for your coalition to look for relationships between variables in your data set (e.g., mental health correlation with alcohol use, etc.) We also offer hourly evaluation services.

HOW DO YOU PROTECT THE ANONYMITY OF THE STUDENTS?
The survey is anonymous and does not ask for names, birth dates, school or Social Security numbers, etc. We do not collect IP addresses. We suppress results for any grade level with fewer than 15 responses to protect anonymity.

HOW DO I KNOW THAT THE STUDENTS ARE ANSWERING HONESTLY?
There are several built-in honesty checks in the survey, and survey data are excluded based on the results of those checks. Examples include reporting more drug use than is feasible, reporting higher 30-day usage of a drug than lifetime usage, and more.

WILL THE DATA BE DISCARDED IF A STUDENT DOES NOT ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS?
At least 20% of a survey must be completed to be included in the analysis.

WILL I NEED TO TRAIN THE TEACHERS ON HOW TO ADMINISTER THE SURVEY?
We provide support and instructions on how to administer the survey, including supporting documents and instructions.

WE NEED HELP DEVELOPING EXTRA QUESTION – CAN YOU HELP WITH THAT?
We provide, at no additional charge, up to a 1-hour review of extra questions, and provide suggestions for any needed improvements, to maximize the usefulness of the data collected. If more is needed, we have a bank of extra questions and expertise in survey question development and can provide those services at an additional cost. For more information, please email [email protected].

WE NEED HELP PLANNING OUR SURVEY ADMINISTRATION, ENGAGING OUR STAKEHOLDERS, OR ENGAGING SCHOOL DISTRICTS – CAN YOU HELP WITH THAT?
We provide materials that can be shared with stakeholders that explain the CLYDE survey and why it’s useful for them. We provide, at no extra cost, up to one hour of virtual (by email, Zoom meeting, or phone) technical assistance or discussion with stakeholders. We have extensive experience in survey planning and stakeholder/school district engagement and can provide further assistance for an additional charge. Please email [email protected] for more information.

WHY IS THERE ONLY ONE SURVEY FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 6 THROUGH 12 WHEN BEHAVIORS OF A SIXTH GRADER ARE VERY DIFFERENT FROM BEHAVIORS OF A 12TH GRADER?
The CLYDE survey is based on the Communities That Care framework, which has been researched and validated to accurately reflect beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. While the survey is validated for this population, we recommend considering the reading and comprehensive levels of students in your community to determine the best sample of students.

WHO OWNS THE DATA ONCE MY SCHOOL SURVEY IS COMPLETE?
The organization that pays for the survey owns the survey data; we distribute all reports to the single point of contact for the paying organization. We cannot share reports or discuss results with any other person or organization without prior written approval from an organizational official with signing authority.

CAN WE GET THE RAW DATA FROM THE SURVEY?
Yes, the organization that owns the data can obtain the raw data for an additional fee and this requires a signed data sharing agreement that specifies how data will be shared between stakeholders
